We install R290 only.
It costs a little more upfront and demands a properly qualified installer — which is exactly why we don't cut that corner. You're not choosing a refrigerant when you get a quote from us. You're getting the one worth building a 20-year system around.
Here's why: most UK heat pumps run on R32 — GWP of 675. R290 (propane) is GWP 3, performs better in cold weather, and from January 2027, new regulations cap smaller systems at GWP 150. R32 misses that bar. R290 clears it easily.

The grant that changes the numbers
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a UK government grant that reduces the upfront cost of an Air-to-Water heat pump — currently £7,500 off a standard installation, or £9,000 if you're currently on oil or LPG and off the mains gas grid (this higher rate runs from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027).
- You don't apply for it yourself — your MCS-certified installer claims it and deducts it from your quote upfront, so the price you're shown already reflects the discount.
- Your current system needs to be a fossil-fuel or electric resistance system (gas, oil, LPG, coal, or standard electric heating all qualify).
- The heat pump needs to fully replace your existing system, not sit alongside it as a hybrid.
- Available in England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland run separate schemes.
